Try Out Blacksmithing (1 Day)

CA$75.00

This is a Private, 1 on 1 class.

Contact me through the contact page of this website to plan dates, and make your $75 deposit by adding this “product” to cart, and purchasing it. The full cost is $300 per day. Full payment is made with cash or E-transfer when you arrive. Here is an opportunity to have all the proper blacksmithing hand tools at your disposal, along with some basic instruction, as you try out beating hot metal. There is NO class pre-requisite for this, nor do you have to have any prior forging experience. This is a great opportunity for those wanting to “dip their toes in” and experience the thrill of forging hot metal.

I’ve had the privilege to teach beginner blacksmithing to a range of people over the years, most notably instructing a blacksmith 4-H group on and off for about 4 years. This class is designed for those who just want to “dip their toes in” and get some experience at the anvil, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience working with your hands. If you are looking for a more intensive class where more emphasis is put on technique with a long-term perspective, check out the “Intensive Beginner Blacksmith Class” I have available.

This class covers:
-What is forging, and how does it work?
-Safety, tool organization, and how to operate in a shop environment.
-Explanation of tools, including their parts, uses, and substitutes.
-How to swing a hammer, stance, and how to do it all comfortably.
-Basic blacksmithing techniques.

The first project we make is a twisted ‘S’ hook, followed by a coat hook and/or a railroad spike knife. From then on the student has free reign to try making anything on his/her own, or repeat the projects as demonstrated.

IMPORTANT! You MUST be of sound mind and body to take this course! You will be in a hot, dangerous, mentally, and physically demanding environment. Swinging hammers and forging lumps of 2000 degree steel is no joke, so don't treat it as such!

Bring proper cotton work clothes, work boots (pants must go over, not be tucked in to boots), leather gloves, and safety glasses.

You must be AT LEAST TEN years old to take this class, but it’s appropriate for any age range above that.

The class starts at 8:30am, and will probably end at 4-5pm that afternoon, with a half-hour lunch break. You must bring a bag lunch, unless you want to purchase a provided meal.

Accommodations available on-site, contact for more information.

Directions to the shop, and a google map pin are on the contact page of my website.
